Braiding basics
Module 1 · Start from scratch
Written lesson & hands-on practiceIn this lesson
Understand hair types, gather your tools, and learn how to prep, part and hold hair before any style.
Gather your tools
- Wide-tooth comb
- Tail comb
- Sectioning clips
- Spray bottle
- Brush
- Practice hair or yarn
Step by step
- 1
Know the hair you're working with
Hair can be straight, wavy, curly or coily, and fine or thick. Each type parts, holds and tangles differently. Look and feel before you start so you can choose gentle techniques that suit the hair in front of you.
- 2
Gather and clean your tools
Lay out a wide-tooth comb, a tail comb for parting, clips, a brush and a spray bottle. Clean tools before and after every session — hygiene is part of good braiding from day one.
- 3
Prep and part gently
Detangle from the ends upward in small sections, holding the hair above where you comb. Lightly dampen if the hair type needs it; never soak it. Use the comb tail to trace a gentle part and clip the rest away.
- 4
Learn finger placement
Practice holding three strands: left strand in your left hand, right strand in your right hand, middle strand separated between your fingers. Drill this grip on yarn or ribbons until it feels natural — it is the foundation of every braid.
Care comes first
Stop if the comb scratches the scalp or the hair pulls painfully. On a person, always ask about scalp tenderness before you begin.
